The Mayor of Chalki, Mr. Fragkakis Evangelos, participated actively in the meeting of the European Committee of the Regions which took place in Brussels on 3 – 4 – 5 February in the framework of their regular meetings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In particular, the Mayor of Chalki as a member of the Greek delegation participated at the meeting of the Commission for the Environment, Climate change and Energy (ENVE), at the meeting of the Commission for Natural Resources (NAT), as well as the meeting of the Commission for Territorial Cohesion Policy and EU Budget (COTER).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During his interventions, Mr. Fragkakis highlighted the voice of the small island and remote municipalities of Europe, underlining the need for effective implementation of subsidiarity, multi-level governance and place-based policies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He made special reference to the importance of the LEADER programme, stressing that it is not just a financial tool, but an integrated philosophy of local governance that gives real power to local communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As he pointed out, for small islands and rural areas, LEADER is a condition of survival and should become a mandatory pillar of European cohesion and rural development policy after 2030.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
At the same time, in the discussions of the Committees, the Mayor of Chalki highlighted issues concerning: climate transition and the energy resilience of islands, sustainable rural development and the renewal of local communities, as well as the need for a fair distribution of resources and policies that take into account the specificities of insularity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The presence and the interventions of the Mayor of Chalki confirm the active role of the small European islands in the European dialogue and his firm commitment to the formulation of policies “from the bottom up”, focusing on local communities and their real needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
