The Mayor of Chalki, Mr. Evangelos Fragkakis, participated on 28 January in the meeting of the Commission for Citizenship, Governance, Institutional and External Affairs (CIVEX) of the European Committee of the Regions, which took place in Brussels, actively contributing to the European dialogue on the enlargement of the European Union and its social cohesion.
In the context of his presence in Brussels, the Mayor had a meeting at the European Parliament with MEP Fredis Beleris.
Topics of the meeting were the projects and the policies that have been implemented since 2019 to improve the quality of life in remote island areas, as well as the challenges still faced by small island municipalities.
Particular emphasis was placed on Chalki island as an example of good practice for sustainable development, energy transition and strengthening the resilience of small islands, but also on the need to formulate targeted European policies that take into account the specificities of insularity.
The Mayor of Chalki highlighted that active participation in European institutions and continuous presence in decision-making centres is a basic prerequisite for the voice of small islands to be heard loudly and translated into effective policies and financial tools.
The Municipality of Chalki continues to consistently pursue and exploit European partnerships for the benefit of the local community and the sustainable development of the island.
