The Mayor of Chalki, Mr. Evangelos Fraglakis, participated as a speaker at the Information Day of the European Project POWERYOUTH, entitled “Energy communities and youth: Protagonists of transition or spectators of change?”, which took place at Impact Hub Athens.
Mr. Fragkakis, founding member of the Energy Community of Chalki “ChalkiON”, the first non-profit energy community in the Dodecanese based on the island of Chalki, highlighted the role of energy communities as key tools for energy democracy, local self-sufficiency and social cohesion.
At the same time, he referred to the importance of the effective participation of young people in decision-making regarding the energy future, especially in small island communities.
The Mayor of Chalki is a member of the Board of Directors of the Energy Community of Chalki “ChalkiON” for a second term, as well as a representative of the Municipality of Chalki in the General Assembly of the Community, bringing the experience of a Municipality that puts the green transition into practice.
Mr. Giannis Syntychakis, Municipal Councilor and member of the Board of Directors of the Energy Community of Chalki “ChalkiON”, also participated in the workshop. He presented the institutional and practical dimension of local government participation in energy communities, as well as the importance of collective action for the sustainable development and energy autonomy of the islands.
The Information Day concluded with an interactive discussion and open dialogue between young people, stakeholders and speakers, highlighting good practices, proposals and opportunities for cooperation to enhance the active participation of youth in the energy transition.
