The MEP from New Democracy and the European People’s Party, Fredi Beleri, was welcomed yesterday on Chalki island by the Mayor of Chalki, Mr. Evangelos Fragkakis. The meeting of the Mayor with Mr. Fred Beleris was part of the MEP’s visit to the island and his meetings with local organizations and residents.

During the meeting, they discussed issues concerning the daily lives of islanders, the unique challenges of island life, infrastructure needs, and Chalki’s development prospects.

At the same time, a guided tour of the island’s points of interest was conducted, with the aim of gaining a better understanding of the area’s potential and unique characteristics.

Of particular significance was Mr. Beleri’s meeting with teachers and students from Chalki, during which a substantive dialogue took place regarding the daily lives of young people living on a small island, the opportunities available to them, and the challenges they face.

As part of the visit, a meeting was also held with the island’s coastal fishermen, who had the opportunity to highlight the most pressing issues facing their sector.

The discussion highlighted both the difficulties faced by fishing professionals on small, remote islands and the opportunities for strengthening and ensuring the sustainable development of the primary sector.

The Mayor of Chalki warmly thanked Mr. Beleri for his visit to the island, for the ongoing interest he has shown in the Greek islands, and for his willingness to help highlight and promote the issues facing local communities at the European level.

This visit reaffirms the importance of ongoing cooperation between local government and European institutions, with the shared goal of improving residents’ quality of life and ensuring the sustainable development of small island regions.
