The Mayor of Chalki, Mr. Evangelos Fragkakis, participated in the proceedings of the Commission for Economic Policy (ECON) of the European Committee of the Regions, which took place on July 6, 2026, in Brussels; as a member of the Greek Delegation to the European Committee of the Regions.
During the session, important issues concerning the future of the European economy and the competitiveness of the regions were discussed, with particular emphasis on cybersecurity and digital networks, the transformation of the European defense industry, the acceleration of industrial production, the 2026 European Semester, and the European Union’s new industrial shipping strategy.
Of particular interest was also the discussion on the potential for local and regional authorities to leverage quantum technologies, highlighting the role of innovation and digital transformation in strengthening local development.
The Mayor of Chalki actively monitors European developments, conveying the needs and priorities of small island municipalities to the Commission, with the aim of shaping policies that promote sustainable development, resilience, and social cohesion in island regions.
The active participation of the Municipality of Chalki in the institutions of the European Union reaffirms the Greek Delegation’s steadfast commitment to advocating for European policies that address the specific challenges and development prospects of small islands .
