The Mayor of Chalki and member of the European Committee of the Regions (CoR), Mr.
Evangelos Fragkakis, participated in the two particularly important meetings of the CIVEX and NAT commissions, taking place in Brussels on November 19 and 20, 2025.
Within the framework of the Commission for Natural Resources (NAT), Mr. Fragkakis participated in the discussion on critical issues related to the Common Agricultural Policy, fisheries, civil protection, health preparedness and the challenges faced by island and rural regions in the new multiannual financial framework of the EU after 2027.
The meeting also discussed strategies for crisis management, medical countermeasures and strengthening European preparedness.
In the Commission for Citizenship, Governance, Institutional and External Affairs (CIVEX), the Mayor of Chalki participates in the formulation of policies related to democracy, fundamental rights, migration, internal security and the simplification of European procedures for the benefit of local and regional authorities. Particular emphasis is placed on the contribution of cities and regions to the European simplification agenda, but also on the debate on the future of the financial framework after 2027.
Mr. Fragkakis underlined the need for small island municipalities to have a strong voice in European policies:
“Chalki actively participates in European decision-making centers, presenting the experiences and needs of small islands. Being present on the CoR Committees is an obligation to our citizens and an opportunity to strengthen the role of local communities in shaping European policies.”
The continuous presence of the Mayor of Chalki on the CoR committees confirms the commitment of the small islands to cooperation with the European institutions, to the promotion of island issues and to the contribution to the discussions for the formulation of modern, fair and effective policies for the European Union and its citizens.
