The Municipality of Chalki is delighted to announce the island’s participation in the “Green Living Areas” Mission (Green Living Areas Mission), which is part of the European Interreg Euro-MED program and aims to improve the quality of life in Mediterranean regions through sustainable and resilient development practices.
The island was represented at the meeting in Brussels by Mr. Evangelos Fragkakis, Mayor of Chlaki, and Mr. Vasilis Roussakis, Deputy Mayor for Development of Chalki.
The mission focuses on transforming Mediterranean territories into green, resilient living areas capable of effectively adapting to the challenges of climate change.
Through community-led initiatives, it promotes the empowerment of local communities, the protection of biodiversity, and green, inclusive development.
Chalki, as Greece’s first GR-eco Island, is a milestone for the Mission, serving as a model for a small island community leading the way in energy transition and sustainable development.
Our island is emerging as an example of local action with a European footprint, proving that even small communities can make a real contribution to Mediterranean and European climate goals.
The participation of Chalki in the “Green Living Areas” reinforces the strategic importance of islands as living laboratories of innovation and centers of green solutions, confirming the role of Chalki as a pioneer in the energy and environmental transition of the Mediterranean.
