The Mayor of Chalki, Mr. Evangelos Fragkakis, participated in the proceedings of the 172nd Plenary Session of the European Committee of the Regions, held on July 1 and 2, 2026, at the European Parliament in Brussels.

The Plenary Session focused on critical issues for the future of European regions and island areas, such as climate change and the energy transition, fisheries and coastal communities, the new European financial period 2028–2034, civil protection, as well as the housing crisis and the need for affordable housing.

As part of the proceedings, the Mayor of Chalki is striving to highlight the unique challenges faced by Europe’s small islands, presenting Halki as a European model for green and digital transition. At the same time, he emphasizes the need to develop a strong European policy on small islands, with adequate funding for infrastructure, energy self-sufficiency, water management, housing, transportation, and the strengthening of social cohesion.

On the occasion of his participation, the Mayor of Chalki stated:

“The voice of small islands must be heard loud and clear in Europe. Chalki proves every day that even the smallest island communities can lead the way in the green and digital transition. Our goal is to turn the challenges of insularity into opportunities for development, ensuring equal prospects for the residents of small islands and especially for the younger generation.”

The Greek Delegation continues to actively participate in European decision-making processes by submitting proposals and developing partnerships that strengthen sustainable development, resilience, and the quality of life in island communities.
