The Municipality of Chalki, as part of its strategy for digital transformation and sustainable development, participated in the Smart City Expo World Congress 2025, the largest international event for smart and sustainable cities, held in Barcelona.
At the Greek pavilion, under the coordination of Enterprise Greece, it was presented yesterday, Wednesday, November 5, by the Scientific Advisor of the Mayor of Chalki and President of the ChalkiON Energy Community, Mechanical Engineer Mr. Vassilis Chantziaras.
The AI SLAND (Artificial Intelligence for Smart Local Administration and Development) initiative, which is part of the broader Chalki program. Lab in collaboration with the Pleiades ecosystem.
This is an innovative action of the Municipality of Chalki, which will be implemented by the Pleiades IoT Innovation Cluster, aiming at combining Artificial Intelligence (AI) with local government services, offering an innovative tool for smart management and decision-making.
The presentation focused on the main pillars of the initiative:
• Digital transformation of local government
• Smart infrastructure and resource management
• Data-driven decision support
• Community-centric innovation
• Reduction of administrative burden and increase of efficiency
• Replicating framework for smart governance in European cities and islands
The Mayor of Chalki, Mr. Evangelos Fragkakis, analyzed the importance and social impact of these actions, underlining that the success of Chalki is not only the result of technological applications, but mainly of the participation and collective effort of the local community.
As he stated, “the residents of Chalki are the core of every initiative. With faith, cooperation and a willingness to progress, they actively support the island’s transition to a model of sustainable and digital community, proving that even a small island can be a great example for the whole of Europe.”
The participation of Chalki in the Smart City Expo World Congress 2025 confirms the pioneering role of the island as a “GR-Eco Island” and an innovation pilot for the transition of small islands to a digital, green and sustainable era.
