Despite being a small island, Chalki boasts a remarkable gastronomic heritage. The island has uniquely preserved its traditions, and this is clearly reflected in its local cuisine.
Local dishes can be found in all the island’s tavernas, while the bakery prepares pitia every morning—small pies filled with greens and cheese.

The tiny Chalki-style stuffed vine leaves with minced meat (giaprakia, as they are known in the local dialect) may require skill to prepare, yet they are generously offered throughout the island.

Handmade makarounia pasta with sautéed onions and local cheese has gained fame beyond the island’s borders. The main ingredients are handmade pasta and a unique soft cheese made from goat’s and sheep’s milk, still produced using traditional methods. The dish is completed with tsiknosi: onions slowly simmered in olive oil.

The traditional Ofto—stuffed goat meat roasted in a wood-fired oven—is a hallmark dish of the island of Chalki.

The area is also renowned for its abundant skaros fish, which are fried or cooked with great skill during the appropriate season.

Finally, one of the island’s most exceptional delicacies is the Chalki shrimp. Small in size yet outstanding in flavour, it is the smallest of its kind, reaching up to 7 cm and resembling a juvenile shrimp. It has a vivid orange colour, a long rostrum, electric-blue markings, and a mildly sweet taste. Fried and eaten whole, shell included, it is considered one of the most delicious shrimp dishes one can enjoy.
